Frequently Asked Questions
Your veterinarian is the best resource to recommend how often to test your pet’s blood glucose level. These recommendations can vary by pet, and some factors that can influence this decision include:
- The type of insulin your pet is receiving and how often
- If any changes to your pet’s insulin (dose, frequency, type, etc.) have occurred recently
- If your pet is exhibiting abnormal clinical signs or behavior
When obtaining a blood sample, gloves are not required. However, since animal blood may be a potential source of disease, pet owners may choose to wear gloves.

A new lancet should be used for each blood sample and should be discarded immediately after use. Lancets should not be reused.

A control solution test should be performed with every new pack of strips. It allows you to practice testing without using animal blood, confirm that the meter and test strips are working properly, or to verify spurious blood glucose test results. It may be advisable to perform a control solution test before a ‘blood glucose curve’.

To perform a control solution test:
- Check the expiration date of control solution and test strip.
- Insert test strip into meter to turn it on.
- Set the correct species code by pressing and holding “c”, and then at the same time press “m”.
- Select the control test setting by pressing “c” to for 3 seconds until you see the control solution bottle icon on the display. Failure to select the correct setting will product inaccurate results.
- Apply control solution to the front edge of the test strip.
- Compare the control solution result to the test range printed on the test strip vial.

We recommend starting with the deepest setting (“6” on the lancing device) on the first attempt to draw blood. Then, if your pet bleeds easily, you can dial the depth back. This is to ensure adequate blood is available for the test and could help avoid needing to prick the pet again.
Warming the area will help increase blood flow. Gently rub or apply a warm (not hot) cloth to the test site. If using a wet cloth, place the cloth inside a plastic bag to avoid diluting the blood sample. Additionally, a thin layer of petroleum jelly may be applied to the test site prior to lancing. This can help the blood form a droplet without getting into the hair.

There is no minimum age of usage for AlphaTrak 3. You should consult with your veterinarian to determine what is recommended for your pet.

Cats and dogs differ in the distribution of glucose in the blood. The unique codes in the AlphaTrak 3 glucose monitoring system account for these species differences to deliver accurate results for both cats and dogs.

Ideally, you should use the same site each time you test. This helps to ensure more consistent results. If the testing site gets irritated or if you are having a hard time collecting a sample, use an alternate site. It is good to find at least two sample sites that work best on your pet.
If you choose the paw pad as the testing site, select an area on the side of the paw that your pet does not step on.
If you choose the marginal ear vein as the testing site, it may help to use a flashlight to see the vein better and to place gauze or a cotton ball behind the ear to make a firmer testing surface.
Currently, there are no validated codes for species other than cats, dogs, and horses for the AlphaTrak 3 blood glucose monitoring system. If you have a pet other than a cat, dog, or horse that requires at-home blood glucose monitoring, you should consult with your veterinarian for recommendations specific for your pet.

Bluetooth® is “ON” by default, so the meter will automatically turn on Bluetooth® when a new test is complete.
To change settings and disable automatic Bluetooth® connection:
- With your meter off, press and hold "c" for more than 3 seconds to enter the Bluetooth® and Glucose Warning setting mode
- Press "c" again to turn “OFF” the automatic Bluetooth® connection mode
- Press "m" to save your preference
To send a result to your AlphaTrak App when Bluetooth® is not automatically enabled:
- Wait for the new test result to appear on screen, or go to your device memory log for a previous result (press “m” for less than 3 seconds to turn the meter on, then press “m” again to enter the memory screen)
- Press and hold "m" and "c" to turn on Bluetooth® and send the results to your App
A code strip is provided with each new pack of AlphaTrak 3 Test Strips. The code strip is used once to set the species lot code. If you lost the code strip before setting the lot code, you’ll need to purchase a new pack of AlphaTrak 3 test strips. We recommend keeping the code strip within the zippered carry case provided with the AlphaTrak 3 Starter Kit.
You can easily switch between species without the code strip: Simply insert a test strip and once the blood drop appears on the screen, press and hold “c” and at the same time press “m”. An icon corresponding to the selected species will appear.
