Cleaning the mix cup

Use Vetscan HemaClean for the cleaning process. If Vetscan HemaClean is not available, substitute over-the-counter bleach (do not use “No-Splash” or scented bleach) to make a bleach solution.

If the HM5 indicates any blank error (p, b or B flags) or sample error (unexpectedly high RBC or PLT, c or C flags), start with easy troubleshooting. Begin by cleaning the wash head manually then perform the soak cleaning process. If the warning flag persists you may attempt this cleaning process that does not use any of the fluids in the reagent pack and allows the user to clean higher up in the mixing cup than any of the automated processes are capable of doing.

1. Open the side door and locate the mixing cup (chamber).

On occasion, the mixing cup (chamber) inside the HM5 will accumulate blood and/or salt debris.

Even if the chamber looks clean, this process can still resolve many blank issues, since there are areas in the chamber that are not clearly visible but which may need cleaning.

2. Clean the chamber

  1. Put gloves securely on hands
  2. Pull 2-3 mL of regular strength, Vetscan HemaClean/unscented bleach into a 10-12 mL syringe. Fill the rest of the way with distilled water. A curve-tipped syringe makes this process a little easier, but a slip-tip syringe will also work.
  3. First identify if the sampling needle needs to be moved up and out of the chamber.
  4. Manually move the wash head away from the chamber so you can more easily access the opening at the top.

If you can see the needle below the wash head, follow the needle to the top then push it up using the 90-degree bend at the top. Push it up until it is no longer in the chamber, then push the wash head over to the right to gain better access to the chamber.

e. Add the Vetscan HemaClean/bleach solution to the chamber, making sure it does not overflow and that no fluid gets on the outside of the chamber. Fill to the black line.

  • If debris is above the black line or stuck to the side below the black like, scrub the chamber with a cotton tipped applicator until it comes clean.

f. Now, drain the fluid out of the chamber by navigating to and selecting the Drain Chamber cleaning option.

The fluid currently in the chamber will drain to the waste container.

3. There may be solution remaining in the syringe. If so, add this solution to the chamber once it has drained and Drain Chamber again.

4. Fill and drain the chamber with distilled water 3-4 times to flush out any remaining Vetscan HemaClean/bleach residue.

5. Place the wash head over the chamber again then walk through the Wash Head Cleaning process to “home” the needle and wash head.

6. Perform a blank to ensure the chamber is clean.
